Tributes have been pouring in for a grandmother remembered as “an absolute lady with the biggest smile” who passed away after a multi-vehicle road collision in Co Louth.
The crash, which involved two cars and a lorry, took place on Bridge Street in Ardee around 11.25am on Friday morning, just hours before the town was preparing for the funeral of Dylan Commins, one of five victims of last weekend’s devastating collision near Dundalk, reports The Mirror.
Gardaí and emergency responders attended the scene, and the driver and sole occupant of one of the cars, a woman in her 70s, was taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where she was later pronounced dead.
A post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course, reports The Mirror.
The deceased has been named locally as grandmother Pauline Sweeney (74), of Tierney Street, Ardee.
Locals paying tribute described Mrs Sweeney as someone who “was an absolute lady with the biggest smile and bigger hugs,” and said she loved Saturday night Bingo in nearby Huntstown and attending her Tuesday Bridge club, reports The Mirror.
In tributes shared on the condolence section of RIP.ie, one person wrote: “I’m so sorry for your loss. Sending you love and strength at this difficult time. We will miss aunt Pauline, she was a gentle, lovable funny person. Thank you for the memories, we will never forget you,” while another added: “Taken way too soon, an absolute lady with the biggest smile and bigger hugs,” reports The Mirror.
Another wrote: “I hope there’s many a ceili in heaven with the angels. Rest in peace Pauline,” and another tribute read: “She always had a smile and craic at our Tuesday Bridge. We will miss her terribly. May her gentle soul rest in peace,” reports The Mirror.
Pauline is mourned by her husband James, daughters Sandra and Karen, son James, four grandchildren, sisters Breda, Catherine, Teresa, Joan and Geraldine, and her brother Paddy. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed that no additional injuries have been reported from the crash, reports The Mirror.
Gardaí have also appealed for any witnesses to the collision to come forward.
Any motorists who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and who travelled through the area between 11:00 and 11:00am are asked to share it with investigating officers, reports The Mirror.
