Tributes paid to 71-yr-old farmer killed by bull in freak accident

A farmer killed in an incident involving a bull in a field near Enniskeen in West Cork on Friday was identified locally as 71-year-old Joseph Shorten, reports The Mirror.

A record is being drawn up in the Coroner’s Court of the pensioner’s death.

Health and safety authorities are also investigating the tragic incident, which happened just before 4 pm on Friday.

Well liked and respected in the local community, Mr. Shorten worked in his shed.

It is believed that the bull attacked him when he was about to open the gate. He was crushed and injured in the incident, reports The Mirror.

Mr Shorten was found by a vet who made an appointment with him to attend to his bull. The vet sounded the alarm. However, the farmer died on the spot. His body was taken to Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem was carried out.

Mr. Shorten of Castletown Kenneagh and Ardkit, Enniskeen is survived by his wife Joan, siblings Mary, Ben and Robert and nieces and nephews. His friends and neighbors also offer their condolences, reports The Mirror.
