A man in his 30s has died following a three-car collision in Co Limerick, which occurred at around 11pm Monday night on the N21 between Abbeyfeale and Newcastle West.

The man, who is understood not to be Irish, was a passenger in one of the vehicles and was pronounced dead at the scene, with his remains removed to University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem will take place, reports RTE.

Gardaí said the driver of the car left the scene and they are working to identify them, adding that a loaded weapon believed to be a pistol was found in the vehicle.

Two passengers in a second car — a man in his 60s and a woman in her 70s — and the driver of the third car, a woman in her 60s, were all treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries, reports RTE.

The N21 remains closed for a technical examination with local diversions in place, and gardaí are appealing for witnesses or road users with dash-cam footage from the area between 11pm and 11.30pm to contact Newcastle Garda Station on 069-20650, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

The man’s death brings to 75 the number of people killed on Irish roads so far this year, six more than during the same period last year, reports RTE.
