Tributes paid to mother and son who died in Cavan house fire

A mother in her 80s and her son in his 50s have died after a house fire in Co Cavan early this morning, reports RTE.

Emergency services were called to the scene of a fire at a house near Ballyjamesdoff just before 2 a.m.

Mother and son Kathleen and Michael Lynch were pronounced dead at the scene.

A Garda spokesman said the bodies had been taken to Cavan General Hospital mortuary where a post-mortem examination would be carried out.

Gardaí have completed a technical inspection of the scene.

“I would have seen the house ablaze and followed into town to see that the fire brigade was heading out to attend the scene at Lackenmore. A terrible tragedy happened in our local community. Our thoughts and our prayers are with the family and the family will get all the support from the local” Local councillor and family friend Trevor Smith said, reports RTE.

The coroner has been notified, the spokesman added.

Local councillor and family friend Trevor Smith arrived at the scene shortly before emergency services arrived.

The Fine Gael councillor also praised the emergency services who attended yesterday’s fire.

“The emergency response, the fire brigade, the gardai, the paramedics, even the local priest, they were so professional and yet respectful and it is only when a scene like this happens that you realise the work that these guys do,” Mr Smith added, reports RTE.

In a post online, the Castlerahan GAA club portrayed the Lynch family as one “steeped in our club and community,” reports RTE.

“Michael was a great supporter, a constant at every Castlerahan game and rarely missed a match,” the post said, reports RTE.
