A motorcyclist in his 30s who suffered critical injuries in a crash at a Dublin speed checkpoint last month has sadly died in hospital, reports The Mirror.
Izzet Can Berber was badly hurt during the collision on the R132 at Lissenhall, near Swords, on May 11. Garda Kevin Flatley became the 90th Garda to lose his life while on duty in Ireland after being struck by the motorcycle in the incident.
Mr Berber had been in critical condition at Beaumont Hospital since the crash but passed away from his injuries on Saturday night. His wife Caitriona told DublinLive this morning: “He passed away peacefully holding my hand on Saturday night. He was an amazing husband and even more amazing father to his son and two stepchildren, reports The Mirror.
“And we are internally grateful to all our friends and family for the support over the last three weeks and also want to thank the doctors and nurses in ICU who did everything in their power to save him and support our family though his time there,” reports The Mirror.
Garda Flatley’s Funeral Mass took place in Balbriggan on May 16, and he was laid to rest in Newcastle. According to Dublin Live, the veteran officer had served with An Garda SÃochána for 26 years.
The Church of St Peter and Paul was completely full for the service, and over a thousand mourners watched the Mass on large outdoor screens — including hundreds of Garda members from all over Ireland, reports The Mirror.
