
Tributes have been paid to a well-known soccer official who tragically lost his life in a workplace accident in County Cavan on Wednesday, August 27, reports The Mirror.
He has been identified locally as Jack McIlroy, aged 25, from Cluain Beag, Nobber, Co. Meath. Mr. McIlroy passed away in a workplace incident at Paramount Doors Ireland in Kingscourt, Co. Cavan.
Jack was a prominent figure in Leinster league soccer and served as the secretary for Electro Celtic Football Club. The club paid tribute in a statement, saying, “Jack, only 25 years old, took on the role of Secretary at our club last year due to his love for soccer. He brought a high level of professionalism to the role during his time as secretary and took on many responsibilities within the club,” reports The Mirror.
They added, “Our immediate thoughts and prayers are with his parents, Alan and Deirdre, his family, friends, teammates, and everyone at Electro Celtic Football Club during this sad time,” reports The Mirror.
Parkceltic Football Club, from nearby Summerhill, also offered their condolences. A spokesperson said: “Our deepest sympathies go to Electro Celtic, Jack’s teammates, family, and friends during this heartbreaking time. May he rest in peace,” reports The Mirror.
Friends of Jack also shared their memories, with one saying: “He was such a lovely young man. I got to know Jack on the sidelines watching Electro play. Many of the kids at the game adored him, always sharing their stories with him, and he listened to them all! We are all heartbroken, and our thoughts are with his parents and family. Fly high with the angels, Jack, until we meet again.”
As a mark of respect, all soccer clubs have been asked to hold a minute’s applause in Jack’s memory at all NEFL fixtures this week, reports The Mirror.
Gardaà and emergency services responded to the scene of the accident shortly before midday on Wednesday, August 27, where Jack had sustained an injury. He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda for treatment but sadly passed away from his injuries.
The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) was notified of the incident and confirmed to The Anglo-Celt that it has launched an investigation into the circumstances. A spokesperson for An Garda SÃochána confirmed that officers, alongside emergency services, attended the scene at approximately 11:50am on Wednesday, August 27, reports The Mirror.
The spokesperson added: “A man, aged in his 20s, was transported to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, where he was later pronounced dead. The Health and Safety Authority has been informed.” They also stated that a file will be prepared for the Coroner’s Court.
Jack will lie in repose at his home on Saturday from 2pm to 8pm, and his funeral mass will be held on Sunday at 11:15am at St. John the Baptist’s Church, with burial following at the local cemetery, reports The Mirror.
