
A man in his 40s has died after being hit by a car in Mitchelstown, Co Cork on Thursday night, reports RTE.
The collision occurred at approximately 9.15pm on the northbound side of the M8, between Junctions 11 and 12.
His remains have been brought to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital, where a post-mortem is due to be carried out, reports RTE.
The man is believed to have been originally from Eastern Europe and had recently moved to the Mitchelstown area.
The car’s driver, a man in his 20s, did not suffer any injuries, reports RTE.
The affected section of the motorway is still shut to allow for a forensic investigation, and local traffic diversions are in place.
Gardaí are asking anyone who may have seen the incident to contact them, reports RTE.
They are especially eager to speak to motorists who were in the area at the time and who may have dash-cam or other video recordings.
