A man who died following an incident in Dublin over the weekend has been named as 31-yr-old Thomas Griffin from Ballyfermot.

Mr Griffin is reported to have swum across the River Liffey after an alleged assault at the War Memorial Gardens in Islandbridge at approximately 10.20pm on Saturday night, reports RTE.

Emergency services responded after he reached lands adjacent to Chapelizod Road, where he was treated by Dublin Fire Brigade personnel before being transported to St James’s Hospital for medical treatment.

Mr Griffin later died in hospital on Sunday, reports RTE.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out, and gardaí have said the findings will help determine the direction of their investigation.

An Garda Síochána has appealed for witnesses to come forward, particularly anyone who was in the area between 9pm and 10.45pm on Saturday night.

Investigators are also seeking road users who may have dashcam footage from the vicinity during that time period, reports RTE.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Clondalkin Garda Station on 01 666 7600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station as inquiries continue.
