Tributes pour in for Co Louth man who sadly died following workplace accident

Tributes have been pouring in for a father-of-three who lost his life in a tragic workplace incident in Co Louth, reports The Mirror.

Locally named as Saul McElwain (40), from Ballynamoney, Carlingford in Co Louth, it is believed he was operating machinery when the devastating accident occurred at around 9:15am on Tuesday in Lisdoo.

The Health and Safety Authority has launched an investigation into the incident, which took place at EK Fuels on the Armagh Road in Lisdoo, reports The Mirror.

In his RIP.ie death notice, his grieving family expressed that he will be deeply missed by his beloved wife Sarah, daughters Naomi, Abbie and Jessica, his parents Richard and Kathleen, brothers Patrick and Ross, sisters Miriam and Vivien, brothers-in-law Benny, Eddie, Mark and Alex, sisters-in-law Pamela, Aideen, Bernadette and Laura, parents-in-law Yvonne and Alec, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, extended family and everyone who knew him.

Tributes have continued to be shared for Mr McElwain, who many remembered as a ‘gentleman’ known for his kind and warm spirit, reports The Mirror.

One mourner wrote: “So sorry for Kathleen, Richard, Sarah, Saul’s girls and the extended family. He was a gentleman and radiated good nature, like his parents,” while another wrote: “Tragic news about Saul, a lovely genuine man who could take on anything,” while another wrote: “Terrible news about Saul, a man that could handle all problems. My deepest sympathy to his wife and family.”

Another wrote: “Condolences to the entire family at this heartbreaking loss. Saul was such a great guy and a gent. I will remember his for that big smile and that twinkle in his eye,” reports The Mirror.

According to the notice, Mr McElwain will repose privately at his parents’ residence on the evening of Wednesday, July 23, followed by public viewing on Thursday, July 24 and Friday, July 25.

His removal will take place on Saturday, July 26 to Dundalk Presbyterian Church, Jocelyn Street for the funeral service at 2pm. Burial will follow at Ballymascanlon Churchyard, reports The Mirror.

An Garda Síochána released a statement saying: “Gardai and emergency services were alerted to a fatal workplace accident at a premises at Lisdoo, Dundalk, Co Louth on Monday 22nd July, 2025 at approximately 9:15am,” reports The Mirror.

“A male in his 40s was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the statement continued. “His body was removed to the mortuary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course. The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has been notified and will conduct its own investigation. A file will be prepared for the Coroner’s Court,” the statement said, reports The Mirror.
