Tributes have poured in on social media from around the country for the family that died in the Tipperary crash on Tuesday night.
Two grandparents and their three-year-old grandson have been killed in a car crash near Cashel, County Tipperary, reports RTE.
The names of the victims are Bridget O’Reilly, 46, Thomas O’Reilly, 45, and their grandson Tom O’Reilly.
They lived at Waller’s Lot in Cashel.
The three men were in the back seats of a car which crashed into a wall in the Windmill Knockbulloge area around 9 p.m. last night.
The bodies of both grandparents were taken to Waterford University Hospital where autopsies will be carried out. The boy’s body was taken to Tipperary University Hospital in Clonmel.
The 22-year-old man driving the car and the 22-year-old woman in the front seat were also taken to Tipperary University Hospital where they continue to receive treatment for their serious injuries.
The five occupants of the car were from the same family.
The Gardaí said a family liaison officer had been appointed to provide support and the family would be kept informed of the progress of the investigation.
The road is closed for technical investigation and is expected to remain closed for some time, reports RTE.
Speaking this afternoon, Superintendent Kieran Ruane said the local community is “shocked and deeply saddened”.
“I have spoken with the family of the deceased this morning, a family that is devastated by this terrible incident. I assured the family and I want to assure the community that local gardaí here in south Tipperary are here to support them and the community, as we all come to terms with this tragedy over the coming days, weeks and months,” he said, reports RTE.
An operations centre has been set up at Cahir Garda Station and Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them.
Road users who may have camera footage and were in the Windmill Knockbulloge area near Cashel between 8.30pm and 8pm. They must share these images with Gardaí.
