A garda detective was shot and died in a an incident in Castlerea, Co Roscommon late last night.
The shooting occurred near Castlerea Garda Station on the main street of the town but details remain sparse as to how precisely the garda was shot.
The garda has been named by gardaí as Detective Garda Colm Horkan.
He was an armed detective and was from Co Mayo. It’s understood that he was on duty on his own in Castlerea when he was shot just before midnight.
A man aged in his 40s has been arrested and is being held at Castlerea Garda Station. A murder investigation is under way with further details to be released later.
