Tribute was paid to a woman who died yesterday after trying to save her young son while swimming at Ballycronin Beach in east Cork, reports RTE.

Joanna Wiśniewska, who comes from Strzyżów, got into trouble after she went to sea yesterday before 1 p.m. to help her ten-year-old son.

Rescue services were alerted and Rescue 117 Helicopter, Ballycton Lifeboat, Crosshaven Lifeboat, Guilin Coast Guard and Ballycton Coast Guard were called to the scene.

Ms Wiśniowska was taken to Cork University Hospital in serious condition but was pronounced dead last night, reports RTE.

Her son, who was rescued from the rock, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Ms. Wiśniowska lived in Cloyne with her partner and two children for several years

Cork East Sinn Féin TD Pat Buckley described the family as “deeply rooted in the community,” reports RTE.

He said Ballycronin is a beautiful beach but there can be high tides.

East Ferry Rowing Club paid tribute to Ms Wiśniowska, saying members were shocked and saddened by her death.

Wiśnioska’s partner and son are club rowers.
