Tributes pour in for the “mammy of the Dail”, Mary O’Rourke who has passed away aged 87




The former Fianna Fáil TD and cabinet minister Mary O’Rourke has sadly passed away aged 87.

Mrs O’Rourke was first elected to the Dáil in the Longford-Westmeath constituency in November 1982. She went on to serve as Minister for Education, Health and Public Enterprise over the course of a political career spanning four decades.

She was the deputy leader of the Fianna Fáil party during the period of 1994 to 2002.

The was Minister for Education under Charlie Haughey in 1987, and then Minister for Health in 1991.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern appointed her deputy leader of the party in 1997, and Minister for Public Enterprise.

Many people have been posting “may she rest in peace” across social media.
