Tributes have been paid as the world’s oldest person, 119-year-old Japanese woman named Kane Tanaka, passes away.
Kane’s death was announced on the Japanese public broadcaster NHK.
Kane Tanaka was born on January 2, 1903, the same year as the first controlled flight of their powered airplane by the Wright brothers.
She was confirmed as the oldest living person by Guinness World Records in 2019.
Tanaka died of old age at a hospital in the western Japanese city of Fukuoka on Tuesday, April 19.
She’s been a lifelong fan of chocolate and soft drinks, NHK said.
Japan has a rapidly shrinking and aging population. Last September, the country had 86,510 centenarians, 9 in 10 of whom were women.
