Triggered: University warns students over classic novel “1984”

A university in the UK has issued a warning to its students about George Orwell’s novel “1984”, describing it as “offensive and upsetting”.

According to the Daily Mail, the University of Northampton highlighted that the book could trigger students on their “Identity Under Construction” module.

“1984” remains a classic book that warns about the dangers of censorship and groupthink.  The phrase “Big Brother” comes from the book, describing the way in which a government monitors peoples’ lives.

Commentators have expressed amazement that the university have acted in this way and others have described it as ironic that a novel that focused on the dangers of censorship should be treated in this way.

“There’s something very Big Brother about it,” Conservative MP Andre Bridgen tweeted.
