As the US-EU trade war intensifies, Tánaiste Simon Harris has cautioned that Ireland would experience a “significant period of turbulence,” reports Breaking News.
Both the US and the EU have imposed tariffs on goods, which the head of Fine Gael claimed will raise prices for all customers.
According to the Irish Examiner, Mr. Harris stated that the EU was actively working with the US to find a solution, but he cautioned about the potential effects of taxes on Philadelphia exports.
“I’ve got to be very honest with the Irish people, I think we are heading for a significant period of turbulence about trade and tariffs. Tariffs are bad for consumers in Ireland, they’re bad for consumers in Europe, and they’re bad for consumers in the United States of America. They will push up the price of goods for everybody,” reports Breaking News.
The Tánaiste stated that although US President Donald Trump had the right to express his opinions on tariffs, the US and EU needed to come to an accord.
“Ultimately we need to find an agreement here that is good for the European Union, good for Ireland, and good for the United States,” Mr Harris said, reports Breaking News.
Although there may be some upheaval, he continued, the nation will “get through it together.”
“Every disagreement has to be solved by agreement, and what I would hope would happen is that we can try and keep the period of disagreement as short as possible, so we can get to the point of trying to cut a deal President Trump is a politician of course, but he’s also fundamentally a businessman. He knows and prides himself on the importance of a deal,” reports Breaking News.
There shouldn’t be a “tit-for-tat” ongoing commentary on the issue, the Tánaiste continued.
“We must figure out how to get through. We must maintain our composure, use reason, and be prepared to participate fully.
Mr. Harris stated that he will call the Government’s trade roundtable on Friday and provide Cabinet with an update on trade progress on Wednesday, reports Breaking News.
