Two men appeared in court and were charged in connection with the murder of a 21-year-old woman who went missing in County Antrim last week, reports RTE.

Brandon John Rainey, 26, an unemployed man from James Street, Ballymena, is charged with the murder of Chloe Mitchell between June 2 and 5.

She went missing in Ballymena over a week ago.

Police said last night they had launched a murder investigation after discovering suspicious human remains.

The second defendant is Ryan Johnston Gordon, 34, a nursing assistant from Nursery Close, Ballymena.

He is accused of helping the perpetrator on the same days.

Both men appeared at Ballymena Court via video link.

Ms Mitchell was last seen on CCTV in the early hours of June 2 as she was walking through town towards James Street, reports RTE.

She was reported missing the following Wednesday, June 7.

An extensive search was carried out at Ballymena, with particular attention to the dense vegetation along the banks of the Braid River.

Both men were arrested as police intensified their search for the missing woman.

The court was told that Mr. Rainey suffered from severe mental health problems and suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, reports RTE.

The lawyer requested that he be transferred to a secure psychiatric ward for medical evaluation. However, the criminal inspector told the court that the defendant had already escaped from the facility three times and that the PSNI opposed his actions.

The judge said he would take Rainey to prison and an assessment could be made there.

He was in custody until July 6.

The lawyer representing Mr Gordon said his client also had “mental health difficulties”, reports RTE.

He said no bail application has been filed today.

His client was detained and an application for bail was filed by June 20.
