Two women say they were assaulted while canvassing in Dublin

Two women canvassing on behalf of Catherine Connolly in north Dublin have allegedly been assaulted.

Having said that, it brewed after a man claims that one of the woman slapped his phone out of his hand to the ground. Many are saying that it was self defence on his behalf.

The man was irate in the footage, but likely because he claims his phone got smashed on the ground by one of the women.

The incident happened as Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald joined the canvassing effort, according to a party spokesperson, reports RTE.

A video shared online shows a man approaching Ms Connolly’s campaign team and shouting threats to “deck” and “slap” some of its members.

Gardaí received reports that two women had been assaulted on North Strand Road in Dublin shortly before 4pm this afternoon, reports RTE.

Neither woman required treatment at the scene, but gardaí said they believe one later attended the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital for further assessment.

A Sinn Féin spokesperson said, “A man assaulted a young woman who was part of a team getting out the vote near the Five Lamps in the north inner city,” reports RTE.

“The gardaí were called and are now investigating the matter,” reports RTE.

“The woman has been brought to hospital for medical examination,” reports RTE.

“This happened as Mary Lou McDonald joined the canvass team, which is now continuing with its work of getting the vote out,” reports RTE.
