Elite Russian marines have been massacred in the Donetsk region, with Ukrainian defence lines holding firm.
The towns of Pavlivka and Vuhleda have been the scene of intense fighting, but Russian troops have gained little to no territory, at a tremendous human cost.
Elsewhere, it has been reported that newly conscripted young Russian men are being used as cannon fodder against well-prepared, fortified Ukrainian positions. Conscripts are simply ordered to advance, only to be slaughtered by murderous machine gun or artillery fire, in scenes reminiscent of similar tragedies in Stalingrad during the Second World War.
