A Ukrainian battle group managed to encircle Russian troops as they slept, with ‘significant’ Russian losses reported.
The action took place in the town of Balakliya near Kharkiv. The Ukrainian military took advantage of the relative weakness of the Russian troops stationed there, after a sizeable portion of Russian assets had been redeployed to positions further south.
The opportunistic operation took place as the Russians slept, so Ukrainian troops were able to advance unhindered. Once the alarm was raised, it was too late. the Russians found themselves surrounded and cut off, and many did not make it out of the pocket.
