President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has welcomed the start of accession talks with the EU, putting the war-torn nation on a protracted route towards membership that Russia has attempted to obstruct, reports RTE.
As we go on with serious, genuine talks with the European Union over Ukraine’s membership, it is a momentous day.
“We will never be derailed from our path to a united Europe and to our common home of all European nations,” Mr Zelensky said in a statement on social media, reports RTE.
It happens as the European Union formally begins accession talks with Moldova and Ukraine, starting a protracted process of membership for the unstable former Soviet governments that Russia has attempted to obstruct.
Nearly two and a half years after the Kremlin’s invasion, Russia has gained momentum on the battlefield. This historic step is specifically intended to show confidence in Ukraine’s future.
“These are truly historic moments. Ukraine is and will always be part of a united Europe. Millions of Ukrainians, and indeed generations of our people, are realising their European dream,” Mr Zelensky said, reports RTE.
