Ukrainians staying in tents in Stradbally will be housed from next Tuesday

Ukrainian refugees in tents at Stradbally Hall in Co Laois will leave next Tuesday, reports Breaking News.

The Department of Integration has begun housing newly arrived Ukrainian families in tents on the site because of a “significant shortfall in accommodation for those fleeing Ukraine”.

From September 5, around 30 people a day come to Stradbally Hall Estate, where the Electric Picnic takes place every year. Up to 500 Ukrainian refugees were accommodated at the site.

The department said a six-week contract had been signed with Stradbally Hall owner Thomas Cosby.

A spokesman for the department confirmed that 207 people, or “beneficiaries of Temporary Protection” live on the site, reports Breaking News.

The first 26 Ukrainian refugees left the centre after spending just over two weeks there.

The spokesperson said: “The contract for tented accommodation in Stradbally runs until October 17th and has not been extended,” reports Breaking News.

“The government should be aware that when the time comes that we can no longer safely and humanely accommodate people in suitable accommodation, then we have to stop and say, that for the moment we have to pause until more safe and appropriate accommodation is made available,” Cllr Moran said, reports Breaking News.
