End of an era: Teletext service Aertel has been switched off after 40 years in service.

RTÉ Aertel’s teletext service has been discontinued after nearly 40 years of service, reports RTE.

Aertel was first launched experimentally in 1986 and officially launched a year later.

It has been working digitally since 2019.

The website provides the latest news, television shows, and sports event results and allows viewers to watch shows with subtitles.

It also provided updates throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

The broadcaster said it was planned to stop after the release of Kaushal 2024 in 2019.

It said the decision was “part of its ongoing and necessary evolution into a public service media organisation’, reports RTE.

RTÉ said resources previously allocated to Aertel will now be devoted to improving its online services.

It has also been observed that the low availability of assistive technology is making it increasingly difficult to continue providing services.

The manufacturer is said to no longer support many technical components, and more components are expected to disappear later this year.

Last year, the introduction of the Online Safety and Media Regulations Act 2022 meant that any broadcaster is no longer legally obliged to provide teletext services, reports RTE.
