It shows the time we live in when a Government Minister has to appoint a “Free Speech Champion” with powers to fine UK Universities and Student Unions if they are found to be restricting lawful speech reports the Metro.
Following on from Poland’s and Hungary’s crackdown on censorship by the left and Big-Tech, The UK’s Education Secretary, Gavin Williamson appointment of a Free Speech Champion will also look at university staff who have been demoted and even dismissed because of their conservative views.
The move has been fiercely resisted by those on the left according to the Metro who quotes a Research Fellow Evan Smith “No platforming” is used to make clear that fascism, racism and other forms of hateful speech have no place on campus. Debating with fascists and racists gives them legitimacy and gives the impression that these ideas can be part of legitimate debate.
