Services at the medical facility are likely to be curtailed between now and the new year as a result of this report. The hospital was already running about €17m over budget by the end of July, and the situation is expected to worsen.

The stark report makes UHL the worst performing hospital in the country.

A spokesperson for the UHL hospitals group said “the scale of the challenge is significant and was predicted in the 2014 Service Plan.”

This adds to the hospital’s woes of long waiting times in AE, and growing concerns for the length of waiting lists. Also, HSE figures show that more than €15 million in private charges were owed to UHL by private insurers at the end of July.
