A significant new food recall has been announced for 10 products sold in supermarkets throughout Ireland, with the public strongly advised not to consume the affected items, reports The Mirror.
This follows the detection of Listeria monocytogenes in various popular spinach and mixed leaf products. Listeria is a bacterium that can cause serious health problems, especially in vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, infants, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.
Typically, infections cause mild flu-like symptoms or digestive problems like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. However, in rare cases, it may result in more serious complications. The average time from exposure to symptom onset is three weeks, though it can range from three to 70 days, reports The Mirror.
The recall, announced by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) late Saturday, covers a broad range of products from McCormack Family Farms, a supplier to major retailers including Dunnes Stores, Lidl, Tesco, and Aldi.
The following batches have been recalled:
McCormack Family Farms Baby Leaves Mixed Leaves – 500g – JD233, JD234, JD235, JD237, JD238, JD239, JD240
McCormack Family Farms Baby Leaves Spinach – 500g – JD237, JD238, JD239, JD240
McCormack Family Farms Baby Leaves Energise Mix – 500g – JD233, JD237
McCormack Family Farms Irish Spinach Leaves – 100g, 200g and 250g – JD238, JD239, JD240
McCormack Family Farms Mixed Leaves – 75g and 100g – JD234, JD238, JD239
McCormack Family Farms Energise Super Mix – 100g & 200g – JD233, JD239, JD240
McCormack Family Farms Oriental Mix – 1kg – JD234, JD235, JD239
McCormack Family Farms Red Chard – 100g and 1kg – JD238
McCormack Family Farms Family Pack – 200g – JD239, JD240
Egan’s Irish Baby Spinach – 250g – JD239, JD240
Shoppers are urged to check their homes for any of the affected batches and to refrain from eating any recalled products. Supermarkets must immediately remove these items from shelves and post recall notices where the products were sold.
Currently, there is no indication that this recall is connected to the ongoing listeriosis outbreak linked to ready-to-heat meals, which remains under investigation, reports The Mirror.
This recall follows previous withdrawals of spinach and mixed leaf batches from McCormack Family Farms that were issued in late July and early August.
The FSAI said: “The below branded Spinach and Mixed Leaves products are being recalled by McCormack Family Farms due to the detection of Listeria monocytogenes. Recall notices will be displayed at point-of-sale in stores. Symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection can include mild flu-like symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. In rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications. Some people are more vulnerable to Listeria monocytogenes infections, including pregnant women, babies, and people with weakened immune systems, including the elderly. The incubation period (time between initial infection and first symptoms appearing) is on average 3 weeks but can range between 3 and 70 days,” reports The Mirror.
