US Secretary for Defence Mark Esper has that it appears that Turkish forces invading Syria are committing war crimes against the Kurdish population.
On CBS’s “Face the Nation” Secretary Esper agreed with host Margaret Brennan when she described some of the Turkish military’s actions against Kurds as war crimes and aired footage appearing to show the summary execution of Kurdish captives.
“It appears to be, if true, that they would be war crimes, it’s a very terrible situation over there, a situation caused by the Turks, by President [Recep Tayyip] Erdogan. Despite our opposition, they decided to make this incursion,” Esper said.
The Defence Secretary also confirmed 1,000 U.S. troops would be withdrawn from northern Syria as part of a “deliberate withdrawal.”
Meanwhile, Syrian government forces have entered northeast Syria in large numbers for the first time in years after a Russia backed deal between Damascus and the Kurds to launch a united front against the Turkish invasion of the country.
