The US military has attacked one of the last pieces of territory still held by loyalists of the Islamic State, effectively flattening the area with a massive bombing campaign.

Qanus Island, in the middle of the Tigris River in central Iraq, was described as “infested” with Islamists and used a transit for I.S fighters fleeing Syria into Iraq.

In a mission to kills as many jihadis as possible and deny I.S loyalists the cover of the heavily vegetated area the US military led by F-35 stealth fighters dropped 36,000 kilograms or almost 40 tons of explosives on the Islamist nest.

The Islamic State was resoundingly defeated on the ground by a broad coalition but bands of fighters belonging to genocidal organisation still roam the deserts of Iraq and Syria and the group’s ideology continues to inspire violence by Muslim terrorists around the world.
