Police say they are back to where they started in their search for an American convict and the officer who allegedly helped him escape after finding the couple’s abandoned getaway vehicle.
Vicky White, an Alabama prison guard with an impeccable record, is suspected of helping long-time criminal Casey White (no relation) escape a week ago on her last day of work before retirement.
Police believe the couple had developed a romantic relationship and their disappearance from the Lauderdale County Jail captivated the nation.
Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton said at a news conference last night that the couple’s getaway vehicle, a rust-colored SUV, was identified outside Nashville, Tennessee, about two hours from the jail.
In fact, on April 29, the day of the escape, the car had been found abandoned, but the tow truck had taken it without knowing that the police were looking for it.
“We’re sort of back to square one,” said Sheriff Singleton, adding that it was not yet known what transportation they used after ditching the car.
