US State of Alabama completely bans abortion paving the way for Supreme Court showdown over Roe v Wade

The US state of Alabama has banned abortion in almost every circumstance including instances of rape and incest and passed legislation which could see doctors or others who end the life of an of unborn baby sentenced to 99 years in prison.

The new law is part a growing trend in the United States with Georgia, Ohio and Kentucky passing “heartbeat bills” banning abortion in most circumstances after a baby is six weeks gestated, with Missouri, Louisiana and Texas likely to soon follow suit.

The new law in Alabama goes far beyond the others however and is not set to take effect until November.

The State’s new law is likely to be challenged in the US Supreme Court, which is exactly what its architects want.

It is there hope since President Trump’s appointment of conservative Judges Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh that the Supreme Court is primed to overturn the 1973 ‘Roe v Wade’ decision which first legalised abortion in the United States.
