A US-supplied Patriot air defence system has reportedly downed a hypersonic missile, plunging ailing Russian President Vladimir Putin into a fit of rage as his wunderwaffen can now simply be swatted out of the sky.
Much like Adolf Hitler had done in the dying months of the Second World War, Mr. Putin had largely pinned his last hopes on the Kh-47 Kinzhal (dagger) hypersonic missile, a weapon he considered to be invulnerable, and against which the Ukrainians had no defence for, or so he had thought.
Enter the state-of-the-art MIM-104 Patriot platform, which has recently been deployed across key sites in Ukraine. On the night of May 4, Russia launched a barrage of missiles against Ukrainian targets. One of these missiles, a Kinzhal, was intercepted by a precision strike by Patriot munition. The incoming missile was struck dead center in its warhead, and fell harmlessly to the ground.
Ukraine can now create an impenetrable air canopy over its territory, and Russia can only see its missiles and drones being blown out of the sky one by one.
