US to withdraw nearly 12,000 troops from Germany after criticising NATO members for failing to increase their own defence spending

The Pentagon has confirmed that almost 12,000 US troops will be withdrawn from Germany in the next few weeks with around half to return home and half to head for other European countries namely Italy.

US Air Force General Tod Wolters, commander of the US European Command, said that the troops staying in Europe will mostly be moved to Italy and the rest to Belgium.

US Defence Secretary Mark Esper said:

“A fighter squadron and elements of a fighter wing will be repositioned to Italy, moving them closer to the Black Sea region, and [making them] better capable of conducting dynamic force employments and rotational deployments to NATO’s south-eastern flank.”

These plans come after US President Donald Trump vowed in June to pull out a portion of American troops stationed in Germany after repeatedly criticizing his NATO ally for failing to increase defence spending as per the organisation’s rules.
