Varadkar admits it’s going to be difficult to hire 1,000 new Gardaí this year

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar admitted that reaching the goal of recruiting 1,000 Gardaí by the end of the year would be “difficult”, reports The Mirror.

He also said that people should not be asked not to enter certain roads, and that every part of the capital should be safe.

It comes after several high-profile attacks in central Dublin over the past few days.

Last week, American tourist Stephen Termini suffered life-changing injuries after being attacked by a group of youths near Talbot Street in the city center in the north.

Several other people were attacked in Dublin on Monday, two separate incidents were reported, reports The Mirror.

There are concerns that the number of new Gardai recruits has fallen below targets.

A number of areas have reduced the number of gardaí due to retirements and resignations.

This year’s recruitment target, set as part of last September’s budget, is 1,000 people.

However, the Taoiseach now acknowledged that achieving this goal would be difficult.

“We have a target of recruiting 1,000 Gardaí this year,” he explained; “That will be more than enough to make up for resignations and retirements,” reports The Mirror.

“But I think it is clear that’s going to be a very hard target to meet. [The] first group coming out this week, it’s going to be around 90 something but we had hoped to be around 200. The pipeline is better for the next couple of passing out ceremonies. But it is going to be difficult, I think, to reach that 1,000 target, but we’re not departing from it, certainly not as yet,” he added, reports The Mirror.
