Varadkar announces plans to call on the Government to restore Social Welfare Christmas bonus payments

The Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar has revealed today that he will actively seek approval from Cabinet over the coming months to restore this year’s social welfare Christmas bonus.

Mr Varadkar’s call comes after it was revealed earlier this year that the Government had no intentions in restoring the bonus which was abolished in 2009. Mr Varadkar claimed he would do everything he could to restore the bonus but has not revealed whether or not he will seek a full or partial reinstatement.

The much loved bonus, which provided families with an extra month’s social welfare allowance during the Christmas period was abolished back in 2009 despite strong criticism from the public and a number of opposition TD’s.
