Varadkar says up to 15% may refuse vaccine but we expect that to change if travel is linked to it

The Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has said that he fears Covid-19 vaccine apathy more than vaccine hesitancy.

Speaking to Today FM, the Tanaiste said that he is far more concerned about people who don’t get the vaccine because they say they’ll get it later.

Varadkar told the Dermot and Dave programme that although he acknowledges that some people are afraid of getting the vaccine, there are others who just don’t get around to it.

Meanwhile the Tanaiste also acknowledged that there is about 10 to 15% of people who just don’t want the vaccine and refuse to take it.

However Varadkar did say that such people may change their minds if the ability to travel and to attend mass events was linked to it.

He added that the overall goal is to have at least 80% of the population fully vaccinated so that it leaves the virus no place to go.
