Varadkar: “Teenagers currently living at home should not receive €188 a week in jobseeker’s allowance – as it is bad for them”

The Minister for Social Protection has claimed teenagers currently living at home should not receive €188 a week in jobseeker’s allowance.

Mr Varadkar said he thinks giving those under the age 20 who are unemployed such sums is not good for them. Mr Varadkar’s comments come after he refused to make a commitment to reverse the cuts in the allowance.

The Minister said: “I don’t think somebody who is 18 or 19, many of whom are living at home with their parents, should be getting €188 a week. I don’t think that’s good for them.”

However the Minister said he was committed to developing work and training opportunities for young people.
