Varadkar: We’ll have to treat the nurses the same way we treated the secondary school teachers

The Taoiseach Leo varadkar was speaking on RTE this week program on radio yesterday morning.

Obviously the main topic of conversation was the nurses strike that Leo Varadkar and Minister for Health Simon Harris appear to have no idea how to deal with.

Varadkar said that the nurses who went on strike technically breach the public service stability agreement by going on strike but to remove pay increments from them might be provocative and that it might be harder to resolve the dispute.

He went on to compare secondary school teachers to nurses by saying that:
“The secondary teachers pulled out of the agreement, went on strike and as a result they didn’t get the benefits of the pay agreement.”

“At a certain point we will have to treat the nurses the same as we treated secondary teachers”

“Otherwise it wouldn’t be fair to treat the secondary teachers differently to the nurses, but our judgement at the moment is that with drawing the benefits of the agreement would be provocative, would be an escalation and might make it more difficult to resolve this period.”
