‘Very concerning’ – The number of people contacting domestic violence support rose by 43% during lockdown

The number of people turning to women’s help for domestic violence increased by more than 40% in the last year compared to 2019. This would include all the draconian lockdowns that the government imposed on the Irish public.

Women have reported high levels of emotional, physical, sexual and economic abuse by their partners, in many cases as a direct result of Covid-19 restrictions.

Last year, 29,717 people contacted the domestic violence support service, 43% more than in 2019.

95% of the people who contacted the 24-hour hotline were women, 5% were men.

The situation is said to be ‘very concerning’, and is a stark reality of how bad lockdowns are.
