John Hart, a Squadron Leader who fought in the Battle of Britain has passed away, aged 102.

Veteran airman Sq. Ldr. John Hart was born in Canada in 1916. He learned to fly in his native country before joining the RAF in 1939, where he was assigned to 602 Squadron, based in RAF Westhampnett in Sussex.

Hart flew a Supermarine Spitfire aircraft during the Battle of Britain, engaging in combat several times. He is confirmed to have shot down a German Me 109 fighter plane on his own, and his actions helped to blow a Ju 88 medium bomber out of the sky over England.

The airman would go on to become a flying instructor and saw further action in Myanmar and Italy.

Married twice, John Hart leaves three children behind. He passed away peacefully in his native Canada.

There are now only four known veterans from the Battle of Britain left alive.
