In what can only be described as the worst tragedy to hit Ireland since the Carrickmines fire, not only Donegal and Derry, but the entire country is rocked by the mass loss of life in the one family.
The tragedy had one piece of good news when first-on-the-scene Francis Crawford shouted towards Davitt Walsh and his girlfriend Stephanie Knox for help.
Hero Davitt stripped down to his boxers and swam out to the stranded family. When he met the car, the father of the 4-month-old baby passed the baby to the Donegal man and he managed to swim ashore through the harrowing and freezing conditions.
They cradled the baby until emergency services arrived. Watch the brave man speak below:
