Gardaí have warned parents to be extra vigilant after an incident in which a man approached a young boy on a bicycle in Donegal two days ago.

A man driving a white van approached the schoolboy in the village of Kerrykeel.

Garda Superintendent David Kelly of Milford Garda station, whose team is investigating the attempted abduction, said officers are taking the incident very seriously.

The suspected abductor slowed down and told the schoolboy aged 10 to get into his van. The man was wearing a hooded mask  and spoke with a local Donegal accent.

The young boy managed to cycle away and reported the incident to his family as soon as he got home.

There was no sign of the suspected paedophile or the van, said to be a Renault Kangoo, when the alert was put out by officers.

Anyone with information about suspicious activity in the Kerrykeel area on Sunday evening are asked to contact Milford Gardaí.
