Warning: Torrential rain expected over the next 24 hours

Less than 48 hours after Storm Frank’s departure, and with large expanses of the country currently underwater, Met Eireann has issued a status yellow rainfall warning for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Cork, Kerry, Tipperary and Waterford.

Up to 35mm of rainfall are expected throughout the day and into tomorrow, and higher ground may see even bigger ammounts. The warning will remain in place until 9am tomorrow morning.

Storm Gertrude is now looming over the sea, and with grounds already flooded or saturated, the possibility of further devastating flooding is almost certain.

All Government representatives, and the Taoiseach in particular, have so far chosen to continue enjoying their Christmas break and have been conspicuously absent from flood-torn areas.
