Watch out: Gardai doing extra checks on speeding, drink driving and driving on the phone today and tomorrow

Gardai have warned the public that they’ll be out and about much more so today and tomorrow as more people will be out on the roads than usual.

Checks for speeding, drink driving and people driving on their phone will be doubled up at a minimum over the next 48 hours.

A number of road safety campaigns have been launched in an effort to prevent crashes or the tragic loss of life from such an incident.

Road safety authorities have once again urged drivers to refrain from using their mobile phones while at the wheel, after it emerged that Gardai caught almost 5,000 motorists doing so in recent times.

Statistics show that using a mobile phone while driving increases the likelihood of an accident four-fold.

If caught, drivers face three penalty points and a €60 fine.

Meanwhile already this week, two people have sadly died on our roads. One social media user said:
“Shane Ross might as well not be in a job with the little good he appears to be making in terms of roads death number.”

“Drink driving ban made no difference, if anything more people are dying on the roads and it’s not to do with speed, it’s to do with bad driving in many cases”.
