A group of about 20 protesters have forced their way into the council chamber this evening, prompting the immediate suspension of the meeting being held inside. Heavy security outside the building could not prevent the group’s irruption into the chamber.

The group were cheered by about 70 supporters located in the public gallery.

The incident followed a failed attempt by Socialist Party Cllr Mick Barry to have a motion on the jailing of five water campaigners in Dublin discussed at the start of the meeting.

The stand-off is ongoing at this time.
