“We don’t want it” – Mixed reactions to propose new digital wallet in Ireland

People are being invited to take part in testing Ireland’s proposed digital wallet app.

The digital wallet is intended to enable users to securely access documents such as birth certificates and driving licences, as well as apply for supports like the working family payment, reports Breaking News.

It has also been proposed as an age-verification tool by Simon Harris, who has said that children under 16 should not be using social media following the Grok AI controversy.

Under EU rules, the Government is required to have a digital wallet in place for public services by the end of the year, and for private services by the end of 2027, reports Breaking News.

The public testing phase is set to begin in early April and is considered “critical” to ensure the system meets user needs and expectations, according to the Department.

The first phase, which people can opt into, allows participants to review the wallet’s design, explore its proposed features, provide feedback, and register for further testing, reports Breaking News.

The second phase enables individuals aged 16 and over to download the wallet and trial limited features.

People can sign up to take part in the testing phase through the Government website, reports Breaking News.

Jack Chambers said the app would “make it simpler” for people to confirm their identity, apply for supports, and access their entitlements as he launched the public consultation on Friday.

“The wallet is designed so that all personal data is fully protected, and the user stays in control of what information they put in the wallet and choose to share,” he said.

“Only the details needed for a service will be shared, and nothing more. Big life events, such as having a baby, moving home, or starting a new job often require dealing with several different public service providers. The digital wallet aims to reduce that administrative burden, making it easier, faster and more secure to access the supports people need. This testing and consultation phase is an important step in building a digital wallet that genuinely works for people. We want to hear the public’s ideas, concerns and expectations. The public’s feedback will directly shape how the wallet looks, how it works, and how it supports everyday life,” reports Breaking News.
