‘We know the Irish’: DUP’s Sammy Wilson tells Johnson and Hunt not to let the Irish Government push them around on Brexit

The DUP’s Brexit spokesperson Sammy Wilson has said that Borris Johnson or Jeremy Hunt shouldn’t let ‘the Irish push them around’.

Wilson who was speaking to BBC Radio 4 ahead of the arrival of the two Conservative Party leadership contenders in Belfast, said the that Hunt or Johnson should stand up to the Irish when it comes to the highly contested Backstop agreement.

The East Antrim MP, also claimed that the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s stance on the issue is not overwhelmingly backed in the Republic of Ireland and stated that many feel that the Taoiseach has overstated Ireland’s case when it comes to Brexit and therefore potentially damage the Irish economy.

Wilson also told listeners that ‘we know the Irish – if you stand up to them they’ll take you seriously if not they’ll push you around’.

He added that he had many negotiations with Dublin during his time in the North’s Assembly, before stating ‘one thing is clear if say what you mean – Dublin knows what you mean and therefore you might get a different attitude.’
