Weather to take a turn for the worse this week, with cold temperatures and heavy rain in store

Summer 2019 is all but over, as the mild weather conditions of the last few days are set to come crashing down this week.

Met Eireann is forecasting cold temperatures and heavy rain for later in the week, as the thermometer sinks back to about 15-16C from Tuesday on.

Today, Monday, will remain relatively mild, with highs of 20-21C likely during the afternoon and little in the way of rain.

Rain showers will develop during Monday night and into Tuesday, affecting much of the north and west, while the east remains largely dry and sunny. This pattern is likely to be reversed on Wednesday, as eastern areas get the brunt of the rain while the west remains relative dry.

Overall, the coming week will be rather unsettled in terms of weather, with early indications showing a mild weekend.
