Welcome news for Dublin commuters as Luas drivers call off this weekends scheduled strike action

There is some welcome news for Dublin commuters this evening as the planned strike action by Luas drivers this weekend has been called off.

The news comes after the trade union SIPTU confirmed that operators have agreed to cancel the 48-hour work stoppage to facilitate further talks. The welcome turn around comes after Luas operator Transdev last week served all staff with protective notice. It is understood that all Luas employees were told informed that their future employment would be on a day-to-day basis until further notice.

That notice came after a number of talks over the pay dispute broke down last month after union members rejected a new deal involving gradual pay rises over a period of three years. Meanwhile Transdev welcomed today’s announcement in a statement, saying they would writing to SIPTU to see if there was a basis for renewed negotiation with the tram driver grade.

The company also said they plan to meet the traffic supervisor, revenue protection officer and supervisor grades tomorrow to have further discussions regarding proposed pay increases.
