Welcome to Ireland 2022! Widowed mother of seven young children gets fined for selling roses on street without a licence

A widow and mother of seven has been fined €150 for not having a license to sell flowers on a County Donegal street.

Maria Cirpaci, 47, appeared in Letterkenny District Court charged under the Casual Trading Act.

According to the Mirror, the court heard that Ms Cirpaci, of Fortwell, Letterkenny, was stopped by Gardai at 2.30am on 21 August last year in Main Street, Letterkenny, as she was selling roses to passers-by.

The court was told that she had been asked for a casual trading license but did not have one.

The Mirror reports that the defendants’ attorney Patsy Gallagher said his client was a widowed mother of seven whose husband died a decade ago

A translator explained the court case to Ms Cirpaci, who has been in Ireland for several years but does not speak English, her lawyer said.

The defendant was granted free legal aid. Judge Éiteáin Cunningham fined Ms Cirpaci €150, reports The Mirror.
