A court said he wanted “to know that they are alive” and asked Tusla employees to do a welfare check at the house of two youngsters who haven’t attended school since March, reports RTE.
After learning that Tusla employees had not seen the 13- and 9-year-old boys in a while, Judge Alec Gabbett of the Family Law Court asked Tusla Educational Welfare Officers to come to their house.
Judge Gabbett asked, “Does Tusla know where they are bearing in mind what has been in the newspapers?” in what appeared to be a reference to the Kyran Durnin case, reports RTE.
“There has been 100% absence from school since March which is quite extraordinary. There have been no sightings of the children and Mum and Dad are unwell,” reports RTE.
Judge Gabbett asked: “Where are the children if they are not at school?,” reports RTE.
The welfare check must be conducted “in the territory we are in this week in all that we are seeing in the news”, the court declared.
“I just want to know that they are alive,” he added, adding that the welfare check at the family’s house “should be done this morning.” This address needs to be checked by someone, reports RTE.
Because we haven’t seen these men, Judge Gabbett expressed his worry. Their absence rate is 100%, and we are receiving several reasons from the parents—anything but “come see me.”
The court heard the case because Tusla is bringing charges against the parents of the boys for their “chronic absence” from school, reports RTE.
“I understand that they are alive,” Mr. Sherry said in answer to Judge Gabbett’s question on the children’s survival. They haven’t been seen by my client in a while.
“Could they have left with friends and family?” Judge Gabbett enquired. “Are they in Ireland?” Mr. Sherry said that he is aware that they are in Ireland, located between Clare and another county, reports RTE.
After completing their welfare check, the Tusla Educational Welfare Officers went back to court to reassure Judge Gabbett that the Co Clare residence was unoccupied.
Because the two parents did not show up for the case, Judge Gabbett issued bench warrants for their arrest and court attendance, reports RTE.
